So my good friend Glitter, she has had somewhat of a rough few weeks in the love department. To give you a little bit of an overview, she’s been accused of cheating, broken up with, been begged to give another chance, and proposed to…all by the same dirty scoundrel. So I’ve been helping her cope with all this mess for a while now and as the amazing friend I am I even invited her to get away from it all this spring break when she spends it with me in my hometown (and yes, my hometown is fucking awesome). But let’s go back. This isn’t the first time Glitter and the dirty scoundrel have gone through rough times, he’s been poisoning her with emotional abuse for quite a long time. So my advice to her was to think about herself and her future. As she is only nineteen she can’t possibly be thinking of marrying the guy that has given her so much pain the past year of her life. A woman in love, I don’t think she heard me the first couple of times.

Yet finally she understood what she had to do despite all the consequences that may come from it and told him that it was over. Dirty Scoundrel didn’t take it too well and everything almost turned into physical abuse but lucky for her and for everybody that loves her, that didn’t happen. If I had heard that he had even laid a finger on her I would have been calling the cops real quick. Anyway, Glitter’s story got me thinking about relationships and the potential abuses that can come from them. Physical abuse is one thing, and you can obviously tell when it’s happening to you, but Glitter was very unaware that she was being emotionally abused for a whole year. So are there no obvious signs to notice it yourself? Is it always going to be someone else telling you? And is that something someone actually wants to hear?

Emotional abuse is something that you can carry with you throughout your whole life and not even realize it. From one abusive relationship to another, you may be the cause of the abuse by bringing in your past. It’s time that we start looking for the signs so as not to poison all of our own relationships and doom them from the start. Glitter said that it was hard for her to hear that the man she loved had been hurting her this whole time. I could see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice that her heart was breaking when she finally saw her relationship clearly for the first time. I could imagine it would be hard for anyone, but “love is blind” is the most accurate statement ever made. I hope that in her future Glitter realizes that she deserves much better. She deserves someone that isn’t going to be constantly putting her down and leaving her heartbroken, but someone who is going to appreciate her even when she isn’t about to leave him. Girls, you should feel appreciated all the time and not just when he thinks he is about to lose you. That’s what love is. Appreciating every single moment you have with the person you care about most.
